The 11th edition of Mung Central is now available – a newsletter focusing entirely on the work of the International Mungbean Improvement Network (IMIN). This issue of Mung Central includes news on the recently held International Mungbean Congress, which provided a platform for global stakeholders to discuss the current status and future plans for the mungbean industry, and much else besides…
Mungbean, also known as green gram, is a grain legume rich in protein, fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients, grown by an estimated 10 million smallholder farmers over 7 million hectares, mostly in Asia but increasingly in Africa and elsewhere. Owing to its ability to produce a harvest in only 55-60 days and to fix nitrogen so improving soil fertility, it is ideal for use in crop rotations with cereals.
First published in September 2016, each issue of the Mung Central newsletter carries the latest news, and a section on recipes which are worth a try! To strengthen international collaboration in the light of future global challenges of nutrition security and climate change, the World Vegetable Center established IMIN in 2016 with funding and support from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). This network connects mungbean researchers from around the world to share experiences, knowledge and technologies based on common principles of cooperation as laid down in a Memorandum of Agreement. To date, IMIN has led to the development of mungbean core and mini-core collections for breeding to better exploit the potential of the available mungbean genetic resources. This collection has been tested in various countries in Asia and Africa, and this has led to the discovery of many novel plant traits such as new sources of mungbean yellow mosaic virus resistance, salt and heat tolerance, and varieties with higher iron and protein content.
