Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa
To address hunger and malnutrition, the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) works with AVRDC in an effort to scale up farmer-led vegetable seed enterprises for sustained productivity and livelihoods across the region.
Agriculture is the most common occupation in East and Central Africa, accounting for 43% of the regional GDP. Most of the region’s population resides in rural areas and depends on agriculture for income and sustenance.
ASARECA is a subregional not-for-profit association sponsored by Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Sudan that aims to improve agricultural productivity among the member states.
