SafeVeg– Local production of safe vegetables for West African consumers
– From Annual Report 2024 –
SafeVeg is contributing to developing a competitive vegetable sector in Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. This is achieved through both supply and demand interventions, that are creating conditions that ensure vegetables are becoming more accessible, affordable and acceptable to consumers. The project uses a market oriented approach that includes the establishment of vegetable business networks, supported by coaching, capacity strengthening and adapted technologies.
This is leading to increased yields, reduced postharvest losses, and farmers becoming better connected to consumers through improved supply and demand synergies. On the policy side, the project promotes the effective engagement of different social groups in vegetable production, processing and trade, with a focus on youth and women. A further important aspect is increasing the supply of quality seed, which is a major barrier to vegetable production in West Africa.
