Growth, innovation and impact: The WorldVeg Annual Report 2024 is out now
We’re proud to launch the World Vegetable Center Annual Report 2024, capturing a year of growth, innovation, and impact.
A major milestone was moving into our brand-new research facilities at our headquarters in Taiwan. This completed five years of infrastructure upgrades, made possible by the generous support of the people and government of Taiwan.
Over the course of the year, our vegetable breeding partnerships in Asia and Africa continued to strengthen. The report provides a spotlight on tomato breeding and breakthroughs in pest and disease resistance. In Tanzania, we opened a new genebank at our regional center in Arusha, focusing on the conservation and use of traditional African vegetables. Meanwhile, “seed homecoming” events repatriated thousands of vegetable seed samples collected decades ago in Southeast Asia back to their countries of origin.
Our projects across Africa, including the Taiwan Africa Vegetable Initiative, Veggies 4 Planet & People, and SafeVeg, helped improve vegetable availability, value chains, and consumption.
Another key activity was leading a coalition to finalise the African Vegetable Biodiversity Rescue Plan, validated by the African Union and launched at the African Food Systems Summit.
Finally, we began work on a new institute-wide strategy, with input from 119 stakeholders in 42 countries. This will be launched imminently, marking a new phase of science and innovation for enhanced vegetable production and consumption in a rapidly changing world.
