ICAR-WorldVeg meeting

WorldVeg Director General Marco Wopereis met with the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Dr Himanshu Pathak and Dr AK Singh, Deputy Director General Horticulture of ICAR and WorldVeg Board member in New Delhi, India on 10 March 2023, to discuss strengthened collaboration between ICAR and WorldVeg. Among others it was agreed to organize a technical workshop in New Delhi to finalize a draft 5-year workplan between ICAR and WorldVeg at the earliest opportunity. This plan involves several ICAR institutions, including the Indian Institute of Pulses Research, the Indian Institute of Vegetable Research and the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, and focuses on: (i) Promotion of suitable rootstocks for tomato grafting to manage bacterial wilt disease; (ii) Overcoming heat stress in tomato; (iii) Evaluation and improvement of amaranth for nutrition and health; (iv) Development of photo-thermo insensitive Indian bean cultivars; and (v) Improvement of yield and quality of vegetable soybean cultivars.
