Veggies in sacks in Ghana: Experience of a woman farmer in Asuoso, Akumadan, Ghana
Following the introduction of the sack gardening technology in Akumadan, Ghana, under the One CG Regional Integrated Initiative entitled ‘Transforming Agrifood Systems in West and Central Africa (TAFS-WCA), the World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg: https://avrdc.org/) noted a series of exciting success stories, emanating one and a half (1½) months later.
Here is a woman farmer’s account of her experience from Asuoso, Ashanti region, Ghana.
“I could only plant vegetables in the wet season, but now I can plant at any time”, said Mrs. Grace Effah. Grace Effah is a 42-year-old woman who participated in sack gardening training organized WorldVeg at Asuoso in Akumadan on October 14, 2022.
I can plant using a small space, and the technology will also help reduce my spending on vegetables because I buy all my vegetables from the open markets, as she noted.
I am a church leader and the president of the women’s group in my community. With my knowledge of sack gardening, I will organise meetings and provide training on the technology to the women. I also plan on going to the community’s information center to spread the news about the technology. These were commitment statements made by Mrs. Grace Effah.
“I feel the technology is less stressful than our traditional methods of growing vegetables”.
Grace liked the fact that the vegetables looked very fresh, even without the use of inorganic chemicals.
We are eleven (11) in my household, and this technology will enable me to produce enough vegetables to support my family’s nutrition.
I am very glad about the technology that was introduced by the World Vegetable Center. I believe WorldVeg is doing a good job and anyone who follows their technologies and training will benefit financially and in good health. Thank you for the support you are offering to women around the globe.
