Agriculture is the most common occupation in East and Central Africa, accounting for 43% of the regional GDP. Most of the region’s population resides in rural areas and depends on agriculture for income and sustenance.

ASARECA is  a subregional not-for-profit association sponsored by Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Sudan that aims to improve agricultural productivity among the member states.
